Rolex Datejust: the history of the model
The Rolex Datejust has a long and distinguished history, and is widely regarded as one of the most popular watches of all time. It was officially introduced in 1945 to mark Rolex's fortieth anniversary, and the launch proved to be an immediate success, with record numbers sold right from the start.
The original Rolex Datejust had a 36 mm case, a self-winding movement and a date function at 3 o'clock. The watch has evolved over the decades, but its silhouette has remained unmistakably consistent. Today it is typically powered by the calibre 3235, one of the finest movements being produced. It's a fully automatic movement with a 70-hour power reserve and is COSC certified, meaning it has been tested by the independent Swiss institute for chronometer accuracy and precision. Because the latest Rolex Datejust also uses a Parachrom hairspring (anti-magnetic) and Paraflex shock absorbers, the watch is well protected against knocks, temperature changes and more.
The Rolex Datejust is now produced in several sizes:
- Rolex Datejust 31 mm: produced in steel, white gold, yellow gold, rose gold and two-tone. This model is available with a wide range of dials, bezels and bracelets.
- Rolex Datejust 36 mm: produced in steel and two-tone. This model is not available in solid gold, but a wide range of dials, (diamond) bezels and bracelets is on offer.
- Rolex Datejust 41 mm: produced in steel and two-tone. This model is likewise not available in solid gold, but a wide range of dials, (diamond) bezels and bracelets is on offer.
In everyday wear, the Rolex Datejust is hard to beat. Its elegant, refined looks combined with its sturdy case and bracelet make it a watch you can enjoy every day. It sits so comfortably on the wrist that, after a while, you barely notice you're wearing it. It's no coincidence that American President Dwight D. Eisenhower wore a Rolex Datejust on his wrist every day.
