Buy Rolex Daytona: the history of the model

Alongside the Submariner and the Datejust, the Rolex Daytona is one of the brand's most popular models. It was introduced in 1963 and quickly became one of the most iconic "modern" Rolex watches. The watch takes its name in part from the Daytona International Speedway, after Rolex became the circuit's official timekeeper in 1962. Rolex did more than just keep time — it also supported the Speedway through various events in Florida. That partnership brought the Daytona to the wrists of many well-known motorsport figures, and the model's popularity took off from there.

The Rolex Daytona has a 40 mm case and its silhouette has remained largely unchanged over the years. On the outside you'll find the well-known tachymeter scale, used to measure speed and distance. The Daytona also has three sub-dials, as the watch is fitted with a chronograph movement.

Inside the current Daytona you'll find the calibre 4130 or, in the most recent 2023 generation, the new calibre 4131 — both among the finest chronograph movements being produced today. It's a fully automatic chronograph with a 72-hour power reserve and is COSC-certified, meaning it has been independently tested for accuracy and precision. Because the current Rolex Daytona also uses a Parachrom hairspring (anti-magnetic) and Paraflex shock absorbers, the watch is well protected against shocks, temperature variations and more.

The Rolex Daytona is currently only available in 40 mm, but there are several variations across materials, dials and bracelets. Here's an overview:

  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in Oystersteel — an all-steel Daytona with an Oyster bracelet and a ceramic bezel.
  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in solid gold (white, yellow or rose gold), with an Oyster bracelet and a gold bezel. A gold Daytona is also available on the Oysterflex strap.
  • Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in platinum, with an Oyster bracelet and a ceramic bezel — arguably the rarest Daytona in the current line-up.

Each year, Rolex typically announces new models and specification updates at the Watches & Wonders event in Geneva. Some models are discontinued while new variants are added to the range. Recent additions to the Daytona line include a platinum version with an exhibition caseback, allowing you to view the movement through the back of the watch.

As a daily watch, the Rolex Daytona is hard to beat. Its elegant appearance paired with a solid case and bracelet make it a real pleasure to wear. It sits so comfortably on the wrist that, after a while, you barely notice you're wearing it. It's no wonder the Daytona has been worn at the height of motor racing by some of the sport's most celebrated drivers.
