Introduced in 1997, the Chronograph version of the Royal Oak retains the elegance of the original Royal Oak design, with an added layer of functionality and visual depth.
The iconic chassis
Gérald Genta's basic design, the octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws and the integrated strap, remains unchanged. The challenge for the Chronograph was to integrate the additional pushers (buttons) for the stopwatch function without disrupting the pure lines of the case. Audemars Piguet solved this with subtle, perfectly polished push buttons that match the design.
The dynamics of the dial
The dial of the Royal Oak Chronograph is more dynamic than the classic three-hand version, thanks to the addition of the chronograph subdials:
- Small seconds: at 6 o'clock.
- 30-minute counter: at 3 o'clock.
- 12-hour counter: at 9 o'clock.
These subdials, often contrasting in color, improve the sporty legibility and break the monotonous Tapisserie structure.
The complication: chronograph movements
The Chronograph models are powered by high-quality automatic chronograph movements. While previous models used external bases, Audemars Piguet has in recent years made the switch to in-house chronograph calibers, such as the Caliber 4401. This caliber has a flyback function and a column wheel, which guarantees gentle operation of the buttons.
Dimensions and wearing comfort
The Royal Oak Chronograph is very popular in two sizes: the 41mm (a statement) and the more subdued, ergonomic 38mm. The 38mm combines the elegance of the original 39mm 'Jumbo' model with chronograph functionality, without the massiveness of the Offshore.
